Protect Our Children from Tobacco Smoke Pollution
On May 6, 2010, Washington County Commissioners proclaimed May as “Protect Our Children from Tobacco Smoke Pollution” month because of the negative effects of tobacco smoke pollution, or secondhand smoke, on children. Infants and young children exposed to tobacco smoke pollution are more likely to suffer :

- acute bronchitis and pneumonia
- coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness
- worsening asthma, ear infections and allergies
- reduced lung function
- negative effects on long-term growth, intellectual development and behavior.
