Protect Our Children from Tobacco Smoke Pollution

On May 6, 2010, Washington County Commissioners proclaimed May as “Protect Our Children from Tobacco Smoke Pollution” month because of the negative effects of tobacco smoke pollution, or secondhand smoke, on children.  Infants and young children exposed to tobacco smoke pollution are more likely to suffer :

  • acute bronchitis and pneumonia
  • coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness
  • worsening asthma, ear infections and allergies
  • reduced lung function
  • negative effects on long-term growth, intellectual development and behavior.

Students from Charleroi, Chartiers-Houston, and Washington School Districts presented the Commissioners with signs and a scrapbook recording their efforts to prevent tobacco use among youth and children.

State Reps. Timothy Solobay and Jesse White were present, as well as staff from Sen. J. Barry Stout’s and Rep. Peter Daley’s offices.
