Tobacco Free Program Recognizes Outstanding Volunteers
The Tobacco Free Program of Washington County Health Partners recently honored outstanding volunteers at an event held at CONSOL Energy Park. The honorees were recognized for their work to reduce adult and youth tobacco use and eliminate it as a social norm in Washington County.
Among those recognized were:
- The Fort Cherry School District for supporting the Minnesota Smoking Prevention Program for students in grades 4 through 8;
- The Pennsylvania Free Quitline for its service to Washington County residents wanting to quit tobacco use;
- The South Strabane Township Police Department for volunteering to continue performing Enforcement Compliance Checks (ECC) in their jurisdiction. ECCs monitor tobacco retailers to restrict youth access to tobacco products;
- The Washington Hospital for developing a tracking system to identify inpatients who are exposed to secondhand smoke;
- The Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) of Community Action Southwest for distributing New Baby Smoke-free Home and Vehicle Pledge Kits and Tobacco Quit Kits to WIC client families;
- Mariah Franklin, of Washington, for participating in tobacco-free youth advocacy projects; and
- Carol Horne, of Buffalo Township, for advocacy efforts concerning Clean Indoor Air legislation.

The Tobacco Free Program is an initiative of Washington County Health Partners. The Tobacco Free Program’s goals are to reduce adult and youth tobacco use and to eliminate it as a social norm. Incorporated in 2000, WCHP is a not-for-profit
organization dedicated to the enhancement of the health
and well-being of Washington County residents.
WCHP performs periodic community health assessments to
identify county health issues. These issues are addressed
through WCHP’s volunteer-led, collaborative task forces
comprised of local organizations and community volunteers
who combine their expertise and resources. Current issues
include: access to health insurance, community wellness,
minority health, nutrition, respiratory health, teen wellness,
and tobacco free initiatives.
