Smoke-free Dining

Welcome to Smoke-free Dining. We want you to be able to choose a dining experience that is pleasant and free from the health hazard—as well as the smell—of tobacco smoke.

The Surgeon General's June 27, 2006 report says:

1. There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. It causes heart disease, cancer, sudden infant death syndome (SIDS), respiratory infections, ear problems, more severe asthma, and damages lung development in children under three years of age.

2. Separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air, and ventilating buildings cannot eliminate exposure. Don't be fooled by restaurants that claim to be smoke-free, but have a section or bar attached that allows smoking. One of the best things you can do for you and your family is to choose to dine in smoke-free places.

Want More Smoke-free Dining?
1. Eat at smoke-free restaurants. Use the smile stickers provided in the Smoke-free Dining Guide to say thanks to the restaurants listed in this guide, and tell them you found them through the guide.

2. Tell restaurants you want smoke-free dining. Use the frown stickers provided in the Smoke-free Dining Guide to encourage more restaurants to become smoke free. Tell them that secondhand smoke causes disease, including cancer and heart disease, in nonsmokers, according to the U.S. Surgeon General, the National Cancer Institute, and the World Health Organization.

3. Advocate to make all restaurants smoke free. Restaurants are required to be sanitary and safe. They should be smoke free. According to the American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation, as of July 1, 2006, approximately 474 cities and counties in 34 states, plus the entire states of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, and Washington, have laws requiring restaurants to be entirely smoke free.

4. Participate in the Blue Card Campaign—Look for official Blue Cards at your favorite smoke-freerestaurants. Fill out your contact info, along with why you are concerned about clean indoor air. The cards will be collected and sent in mass to PA Senators and Representatives. Blue Cards may also be obtained by calling the Tobacco Free Program at 724-222-6511 or 1-866-904-FREE (3733)
